Medieval Tarnów, alike numerous towns at the time, was fortified. City walls, doubled in its north section stretching along present Wałowa street (from the Kraków Gate up to Basztowa street) was strengthened with half towers.
One survived at Basztowa street until today. Unlike closed towers, these were open on the inside, allowing defenders sufficient amount of air during fierce exchange of fire. The half tower had 3 levels with embrasures, and there was a moat in front of it. Its wall was almost 1 meter thick.
