The limestone hill towering over the Prądnik Valley, near the town of Skała, hides medieval secrets. You will find there a complex of unusual monuments surrounded by a stone wall, dating back to the Middle Ages.
The history of Grodzisko began in the 12th century, when a defensive stronghold was built in this place, destroyed soon after as result of local skirmishes. Then, the sister of King Bolesław V the Chaste (Bolesław Wstydliwy) – Salomea lived here together with the Poor Clares, for whom a monastery and a church were built. In the 14th century, Poor Clares were moved to Kraków, while the abandoned buildings of Grodzisko fell into ruin. They were rebuilt in the 17th century in the Baroque style on the occasion of the beatification process of Salomea. The new complex of buildings, which included church and grotto-chapels, was named the Hermitage of the Blessed Salomea.
