Wolski Forest is the largest green enclave in Kraków, often referred to as the lungs of the city. It is also where the Kraków Zoological Garden has found its permanent home.
Eight walking trails with a total length of about 36 kilometres, bicycle, ski and horse trails, as well as benches, rain shelters and educational boards - all these elements make the Wolski Forest one of the favourite areas for rest and recreation in the heart of the city. This is not all – the forest also features a number of interesting monuments, including a monastery and a hermitage of the Camaldolese Order on Srebrna Góra, the Baszta Villa, originally called the Belvedere on Przegorzalska Skała (now property of the Jagiellonian University), as well as the Józef Piłsudski Independence Mound – you can climb it to see the entirety of the Forest and a panorama of Kraków. Many trails lead to or past the Zoological Garden – a favourite destination for kids. The wooded area has become home to almost 1,500 animals, representatives of nearly 300 species, many of them very rare and threatened with extinction. There are several food outlets operating near the entrance to the Garden.
