The magnificent Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help is located in the western part of the old Podgórze. The Church and the Redemptorist Monastery, designed by Jan Sas-Zubrzycki, were erected in the early 20th century.
The miracle-making painting of Our Lady, housed in the church, is a copy of the ninth - or twelfth-century icon that Pope Pius IX brought from Rome and handed over to the Redemptorist guardianship in 1865. The Redemptorists were supposed to propagate her cult all over the world. Karol Wojtyła and Blessed Aniela Salawa often prayed before the Krakow painting, at which anincessant novena has been held since 1952. As an expression of the significance he attached to the cult of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Pope John Paul II crowned the Krakow painting with the papal crowns in 1994. The most important feast day in the sanctuary falls on June 27.
